Balloon flowers (platycodon) are great perennials. They bloom for most of the summer if you keep them deadheaded, and they aren’t bothered by pests or diseases. I’ve also had great luck growing them in the shade that continues to encroach on my yard.
One of the bonuses of balloon flowers is that they put on their own little fall color show. The leaves turn reddish and then bright-gold:
There are many great balloon flower cultivars, but my favorite is ‘Mariesii’ which grows 18-36 inches tall.
I scatter balloon flowers throughout my flowerbeds because they are such reliable bloomers. Just make sure you mark where you plant them because they are very slow to wake up in the spring.
