Late-summer Star

I always take Salvia ‘Whopper Lighthouse’ for granted throughout the summer because it really doesn’t start revving up until about mid-August. But when the plants finally bloom they become the star of the garden, and quite frankly, the only annual that still looks fresh in the garden during late summer into fall.

Perhaps ‘Whopper Lighthouse’ got its name from being a scarlet-red beacon for hummingbirds. Just about every morning when I look outside I see one or more of the tiny birds feeding from the tubular flowers.

‘Whopper Lighthouse’ grows 30 inches tall in full sun to part shade. It’s a carefree annual without any pest or disease problems.
