I cracked open a window the other day even though the temperature was only in the 50s. Sometimes a gal needs a little fresh air…even if it’s the chilly kind.
I could hear the trills of scores of Juncos outside, but soon there were all sorts of other bird calls. It sounded like what I imagine a rain forest sounds like. All sorts of different whistles and warbles. I grabbed a pair of binoculars and went outside.
There was a tree full of Grackles contributing to the cacophony. There were also a half-dozen Mourning Doves cooing on the ground beneath my apple tree, and a friendly Chickadee stealing sunflowers from my birdfeeder. But that didn’t explain all the songs I was hearing.
Soon I spotted the other culprits…some of the earliest spring migrants to arrive every year.
A pair of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers were playfully chasing one another in the oak trees:
And the dense shrubs and trees were full of Hermit Thrushes hoping to sneak by unnoticed:
