Despite the goofy weather we had in 2013, Heuchera ‘Midnight Rose’ looked fantastic all summer long. Each leaf is a different color with shades of red, pink or cream contrasting with the plant’s dark, olive-green leaves.
‘Midnight Rose’ grows 10 inches tall with a 16-inch spread and is a great plant for areas that receive less sunlight. Heucheras will tolerate sun if they’re kept well-watered, but some of the cultivars can be susceptible to sunburn. It’s best to put them in a location where they’ll get some shade during the hottest part of the day.
In the summer ‘Midnight Rose’ sends up 2-foot-tall coral bell flowers. I like to plant my heucheras next to the ferny foliage of astilbes. The reddish leaves of ‘Midnight Rose’ look particular fetching when planted with hostas.
