I thought I gave away daylily ‘Prairie Blossoms’ years ago, but this year it’s back in a big way. The daylily that replaced it is suddenly finding itself competing for prime real estate.
‘Prairie Blossoms’ is a miniature daylily. At the time I dug it up I was into the larger-flowering daylily varieties, so for the last few summers beautiful ‘Annie Armstrong’ has taken its place:
‘Annie Armstrong’ grows 24 inches tall with 6-inch, ruffled, lemon-yellow flowers. I guess I didn’t dig up all the roots from ‘Prairie Blossoms’ because after a several-year absence it has made an impressive reappearance with at least 8 healthy scapes loaded with flowers.
‘Prairie Blossoms’ actually grows an inch taller than ‘Annie Armstrong’ (25 inches) but the flowers are only 4 inches across:
‘Prairie Blossoms’ blooms early in the daylily season and ‘Annie Armstrong’ appears later, so I didn’t think I’d see them blooming at the same time. However, this season everything seems to be behaving abnormally, and sure enough the other day there were flowers on both. Thankfully they look pretty good together:
I can’t tell where one plant ends and the other begins, so I guess I’ll just let them duke it out.
