The ‘African Sunset’ petunias I planted in a barrel last summer did so well that I decided to grow them again. I was initially drawn in by their promise of orange flowers. The flowers aren’t really orange, but they’re still pretty. They’re more of a dark-salmon, and they fade as the flowers age:
Last year I forgot to water my plants for most of the summer yet they bloomed for twenty-two weeks until a frost finally got them during the last week of October.
‘African Sunset’ grows about 10 inches tall and spreads about 2 feet. Last summer my plants needed no deadheading and they didn’t get leggy or hollow out in the middle like some cultivars tend to do.
They were impressive from the beginning of the growing season until the end, and I’m hoping for a repeat performance this year.
