Daylily Days

I’m in flower heaven when the daylilies go gangbusters. It’s so fun to open the shades every morning to see the day’s color display. This was one of my flowerbeds last week:

This year has been a bit strange. Many of my daylilies only sent up one or two scapes, yet the plants don’t look at all like they need dividing. In one flowerbed there is a cluster of daylilies that didn’t bloom at all this year. I’m not sure what’s going on. There have still been some days with lovely flashes of color, but they pale in comparison to the last two summers which were spectacular.

The daylily season is starting to wind down. I’ve pulled the last flower off many scapes already. I’m always a little sad when that happens because I know I won’t see any more blooms until next year. But there are still some pleasant surprises out there. ‘Space Wars’ blooms later in the season so its flowers just started opening the other day. Those flowers are huge and have a delectably-fragrant scent.

‘Baby Bear’ has had a fantastic summer. It’s been blooming like this every day for weeks:

And ‘Apricot Symphony’ started cranking out the flowers just when its neighbors were quitting for the season:
