It will officially be autumn in a few days, but nobody told my ‘Moonstruck Yellow’ Marigolds. They are still blooming like it’s early July. I love annuals that give it their all until frost.
Most of my rudbeckias and cosmos have pooped themselves out and are dry and crispy by now, but ‘Moonstruck Yellow’ is still growing in a nice sturdy clump with attractive, dark-green foliage. Other than deadheading the plants occasionally, I haven’t had to fuss with them one bit. Even when we received a couple inches of rain last week, the almost-5-inch blossoms handled the deluge without drooping, flopping or snapping.
This cultivar is a boon for the monarch butterflies. They migrate over thousands of miles in the fall and need sources of nectar along their journey. The plump, golden-yellow flowers are also a big hit with the bumblebees in my neighborhood.
‘Moonstruck Yellow’ grows 15 to 18 inches tall in full sun or partial-shade.
