I’ve never grown a tall sedum before—most of my sedums max out at about 18 inches—but when I saw the big, dark-rose blooms of ‘Thunderhead’ I was smitten.
The breeders of this beautiful sedum also boast sturdy stems and long-lasting flowers.
‘Thunderhead’ grows 27-30″ tall and prefers full sun. The plants have an upright habit, and the flowers are irresistible to bees. This cultivar blooms in August and September and is hardy in Zones 4-9.
My plant bloomed for about a month and did not need staking. I planted it at the top of a wall that receives the full brunt of winter’s north wind, so I’ll be putting that Zone 4 hardiness classification to the test very soon.
