When we got our first decent warm spell of the year last weekend, the honeybees from the neighbor’s hive made a—wait for it—beeline for the birdbath in our backyard that I had just set up for the spring migrating birds.
Honeybees use water for a number of reasons, but one of them is to cool down the hive. It must’ve been getting steamy in there because they collected water from sunup to sundown for several days, and I had to keep refilling the bath.
The birds that did land on the bath seemed agitated by all the swarming insects, so I set up a second birdbath for the birds. Everyone is now getting along nicely.
