These days when one of my perennials doesn’t survive winter or dies of old age I replace it with a plant that I know will survive Wisconsin winters. I’ve had to replace too many perennials over the last couple of years.
Siberian Irises are hardy in Zones 3-9, so I know they’ll be winter-tough. This spring I bought a couple of irises to fill some bare spots. ‘Concord Crush’ was the first to bloom and it’s a stunner. The flowers are not only a vibrant blue-purple color, but they are also double and ruffled. You can’t get much showier than that.
‘Concord Crush’ grows 28-36 inches tall in sun or part-shade. Siberian Irises prefer rich-well-drained soil, but they’ll tolerate many growing conditions. The plants should be watered regularly their first year until they are established.
My plant is new so I only have one bloom this year, but I’m looking forward to seeing the display from ‘Concord Crush’ in the coming years.
