Ever since the Polar Vortex wiped out scores of my perennials a few years ago, I’ve been much more picky about plant hardiness. Sedums (showy stonecrop) are tough plants. Some of them are even hardy to Zone 2.
This jewel is ‘Carmen’:
The plants grow 15 to 18 inches tall and about 2 feet wide. The light-pink flowers appear on sturdy, upright stems:
The flowers are about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide, making a nice landing spot for pollinators.
Sedums prefer well-drained soil in full sun. They’ll grow in part-sun but they made need a little support to prevent flopping. I’m surprised my sedums did so well this year considering how much rain we got in July and August.
