These Stockings Aren’t Black

I like to use meadow rues (thalictrum) in my partial shade gardens. The plants prefer moist, rich soils (but will tolerate average soil). You can purchase a number of different cultivars that grow anywhere from 2 feet to 6 feet tall. The ageratum-like flowers are suspended on airy stems so the plants are practically see-through. I use them in the back and middle of my borders.

‘Black Stockings’ (pictured above) gets its name from its black plant stems. Unfortunately, the plant will only develop black stems if you grow it in the sun.  Thus, I am the proud owner of Green Stockings.

That doesn’t mean I still can’t enjoy the pretty lavender flowers:
