When someone says a hosta is slow-growing, I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean. Will it take 5 years to reach its final size? Ten?
I’ve grown Hosta ‘Great Expectations’ for several years now, and it already has a spread of almost 3 feet.
The leaves are massive with blue-green margins and a limey-green center that can turn yellow or even a creamy-white as the summer progresses. In mid-summer the plant sends up 24″ inch scapes covered with white flowers.
Because of its giant size, this hosta definitely makes a statement in the shade garden. The leaves are thick and puckered, so they are more resistant to slug damage.
If my plant continues its spread, I’m going to have to move some of the neighboring astilbes and goatsbeard plants before they get buried.
‘Great Expectations’ is hardy in Zones 3-9 and is one of the most popular hostas of all time, so you should be able to find it for sale at your local garden center.
