When I was tilling up my flowerbeds before planting all my flower seedlings, I noticed this strange plant in the middle of one of the beds. It looked kind of weed-like and very healthy.
But as I pulled away the nearby weeds and leaves I noticed there were three of them in a row next to two anise hyssop plants that overwintered.
I thought, have weeds gotten so evil that they are now coming up in a straight line so they look like they belong?
I keep maps of my flowerbeds from year to year, so I did some checking. It turns out these are Salvia ‘Purple Fairy Tale’ plants that overwintered.
While I’m pleased they survived, another thought crossed my mind. I lost scores of perennials over the winter. Some of them were Zone 3 plants and I’m in Zone 5! But 3 plants that I grew last year as annuals managed to survive? That’s wacky!
