Siberian Bugloss

I don’t grow many spring-blooming plants, but one of my favorites is the eye-catching Siberian bugloss (Brunnera macrophylla).

I saw a plant in full bloom in a garden center’s display bed a few years ago and fell in love with its cheery baby-blue flowers.

Siberian bugloss is a perennial that blooms for several weeks in May. There are cultivars available that range in height from 12 to 16 inches. Some of them have variegated foliage.

My species plant forms a 16-inch mound with fuzzy dark green leaves. Siberian bugloss prefers partial shade to full shade, but will grow in sunny conditions if you provide plenty of moisture.

The sky-blue flowers practically scream “Welcome Spring!”
