Most of the bumble bee bums I see sticking out of my flowers are black.
But I’m paying more attention these days because I’d love to spot a Rusty-patched bumble bee in my flowerbeds. This is an endangered species, but this summer some have been spotted at the UW Arboretum which is only a few miles from my house.
I got excited when I spotted some rust coloring on this bumblebee a few weeks ago, but it turned out to be a Red-belted bumble bee.
He’s not a Rusty-patch, but he’s still a handsome fellow:
