In 1979 a UW-Madison group vowed that if they won election to the Wisconsin Student Association they would “bring the Statue of Liberty” to Madison. They did indeed win the election and made good on their promise.
A Styrofoam Lady Liberty made up of a head, arm and torch appeared on frozen Lake Mendota on February 22, 1979.
This year the Wisconsin Union brought Lady Liberty back for the Winter Carnival, but this time she was inflatable!
In fact when my friend and I stepped out onto the ice of Lake Mendota on Saturday, Lady Liberty’s generator had run out of gas, and she slowly deflated before our eyes. But soon someone ran out onto the ice and gave the generator some juice and she rose again from the ashes.
There were people ice fishing, flying kites and building snowmen nearby, but my favorite was the yoga class.
