The last two growing seasons have been very wet, and some plants struggled like rudbeckias. They like it dry and succumb to diseases when it’s damp.
Last year I cut back on how many rudbeckia plants I sprouted from seed because I was concerned about another wet growing season. But because I really don’t think we could have three record rainfall summers in a row (at least I hope so!), it might be a good gamble to count on a more normal growing season next year.
I don’t know how farmers do it. At least if the weather and bugs and rodents all go on the attack next spring in my yard, I don’t have to worry about losing my livelihood or not being able to feed livestock or people. I’ll just enjoy a few less blooms.
