Because rain has been plentiful this growing season and Joe Pye Weed LOVES moist conditions, my plants are growing wildly this year.
‘Little Joe’ is supposed to reach 4 feet tall, but my plants are over 6 feet tall.
My native Joe Pye Weed plants in the other corner of the yard are getting close to surpassing 8 feet.
One of my neighbors thought these plants were giant ageratums, and they do kind of look like an ageratum on steroids.
The flowers are a favorite of all kinds of pollinating bees, wasps and butterflies, and the plants are very winter-hardy (to U.S. Zone 2).
They are one of the last perennials to begin blooming in my garden in late summer, and they are usually the slowest to appear in spring, so I have to be diligent about marking their spot so I don’t dig them up!
