“Like a well-aged cheddar cheese, this little guy will keep you coming back for more.” That’s the Solaris Farms description of daylily ‘Cheddar Weasel’ from daylily breeder Nate Bremer (whose family owns Solaris Farms). I purchased one of these fun plants at a local daylily sale 11 years ago, and it’s still going strong.
The flower color is unique, and it can look different depending on the amount of light available. Officially ‘Cheddar Weasel” is registered as a “gold maroon blend” but I like the Solaris Farms description better: “Weathered gold-orange with a wonderful maroon eye.”
‘Cheddar Weasel’ grows 18 inches tall with 3-inch blooms and it’s a Solaris Farms TNT plant. Solaris Farms has given this designation to the best plants they grow—it stand for “Top Northern Tier”.
Daylilies with that designation are the best at handling high and low temperatures, and conditions that are too wet or dry or are subject to freezing and thawing. These daylilies must also have a better-than-average bud count.
‘Cheddar Weasel’ is a dormant daylily that grows in the middle of the daylily season.
