Last fall I moved some my daylilies from a bed that had gotten too shady to a bed that, thanks to a tree being removed, had gotten too sunny for my shade-loving astilbes.
Everyone is quite happy with the trade. Many of the astilbes are ready to bloom. I thought it would take them at least summer to get adjusted since I also divided many of them when I moved them.
Astilbes can survive in the sun, but they need constant watering. And if you forget, the leaves will turn brown and crispy. If they go too long without water they can even die back to the ground. They are much easier to take care of when growing in the shade.
Other than needing ample moisture, they are foolproof. They have no insect or critter enemies, and I’ve never seen one attacked by a disease.
Daylilies will of course grow just about anywhere—even in part-shade. You will get fewer blooms in part-shade and you may have to stake up the scapes, but they will do their best to bloom.
