Every once in awhile I veer from the script and try a different petunia in my front yard wall bed, but so far nothing has ever compared to ‘Tidal Wave Silver’. It’s been around a long time—it won the All American Selections award for outstanding annuals 22 years ago already!
These days I feel that seed companies are too quick to replace their plant cultivars with the newest thing. Just when I find something I really like to grow, it disappears. Thankfully this petunia has stuck around for a long time. Just 3 plants are still cranking out a tremendous number of blooms, and it’s already September.
‘Tidal Wave Silver’ grows 8 inches tall and spreads 4 feet. The plants stay full for the duration of the growing season—they do not die out in the middle like so many other petunia cultivars do. The flowers look more silver on cloudy or overcast days, but on sunny days you can more easily see the purple veins and centers.
