Time: 3:30 p.m.
Conditions: Disgusting, but not as disgusting as this morning when it was 72 degrees with a dewpoint of 72 (100% humidity). The sky finally couldn’t hold anymore moisture and started dumping mist everywhere. Now it’s partly cloudy and 81 degrees with a dewpoint of 70. There’s a tiny line of thunderstorms that should arrive here any moment now and finally break the humidity.
Observed from: the lovely air- conditioned house with one quick trip outside to check on a tomato plant.
Notes: The birds have been mostly absent from my yard for the last few weeks raising broods, but I’m finally starting to see some of the parents and babies visiting the feeders.
I have 3 rabbits that hang out in the yard regularly, but they are eating clover (I leave a patch in the lawn just for them) and apples that the squirrels yank off the apple tree and fling to the ground. I haven’t lost a single plant in my garden to the rabbits, so the situation is working for everyone at the moment.
Today’s Count:
- 1 Mourning Dove
- 2 House Sparrows
- 2 Chickadees (mom and baby)
- a mother house wren and her babies that fledged this morning. I had to distract the neighbor’s cat because it was giving the mother wren a heart attack.
- 1 Downy Woodpecker
- 1 noisy Blue Jay
- 1 Crow that didn’t think I’d see him land on the birdfeeder
- 1 rabbit eating apples
- 3 Gray Squirrels chasing each other around the yard
- 1 White-breasted Nuthatch
- 1 Black Swallowtail Butterfly
- 2 Cabbage Butterflies
- 1 chipmunk
- Several big, black clouds. Here comes the rain!
