Daylily ‘Charles Johnston’ continues to thrive in a part-shade location in my yard. Out of the hundreds of daylily cultivars I grow, it’s one of only a handful that seem to bloom just as much in a light-restricted area as they would in a sunnier spot.
This cultivar won an Honorable Mention award in 1985 and an Award of Merit in 1988 from the American Hemerocallis Society, and is the parent plant of at least 80 other daylily cultivars! One of those “children” is ‘Scarlet Orbit’ which I also grow and love because it puts out so many flowers each summer.
‘Charles Johnston’ has 6-inch cranberry-red flowers that appear on 24-inch scapes. The cultivar was registered in 1981.
Despite being more than 40 years old, you can still find this winning cultivar for sale.
