One of the plants that brought me the most joy this summer was an afterthought. I had a bare space at the corner of the flowerbed in front of our screen porch, so I stuck one of my leftover dahlia ‘Figaro’ plants in that spot. I grew a mix this year so I had no idea what color it would be, but was delighted when it bloomed with bright, rich red flowers.
‘Figaro’ dahlias are compact plants that grow 14 to 18 inches tall. My red beauty hit 20 inches. It’s been churning out flowers since June and shows no sign of stopping.
The flowers are double or semi-double, and the plants have no disease or pest issues.
I wasn’t the only one who loved this plant. Bumblebees have been collecting nectar from the flowers all summer long.
