The Jolt dianthus plants I grew this summer really showed off. Because we had so little rain, the flowers on each individual plant lasted much longer than normal before they needed deadheading.
I like this annual because the flowers appear a little later in the season than many other annuals, so it adds some fresh color to the garden starting in late July and early August.
This is ‘Pink Jolt’ which is indeed a jolt of dazzling hot pink:
It’s fun to pair with purples like this lisianthus:
Or a lavender like Verbena ‘Meteor Shower’:
‘Pink Magic’ Jolt is a combination of dark pink, light pink and white flowers:
Both of these cultivars grow 16 to 20 inches in full sun to part-sun conditions, and the flowers attract butterflies.
I like my accidental combination of ‘Pink Magic Jolt’ flowering behind Zinnia ‘Profusion Double Deep Salmon’. I wouldn’t have thought those colors would complement each other so well.
This cultivar makes a long-lasting cut flower, and some years my plants have even survived winter.
