Garden Winner: Amaranthus ‘Hot Biscuits’

I’ve grown quite a few Amaranthus cultivars over the years with mixed results. Some that claimed to grow 4 feet tall stayed under a foot tall and looked ridiculous in the back row of my flowerbed.  Others got so top-heavy that they would snap off in the slightest of rain storms.

I think I’ve finally found a winner. ‘Hot Biscuits’ has beautiful burnt-orange plumes that reach 40 to 48 inches tall. The plant is sturdy and the color blends beautifully with the rest of the flowers in the garden.

I sprouted ‘Hot Biscuits’ from seed indoors this spring. Sometimes it’s harder to sprout tall plants because they get leggy before it’s time to set them outside, but ‘Hot Biscuits’ behaved perfectly and had excellent germination.

I’m usually a little hesitant to fill a garden with something new so I only planted 3 of them this year. Next year I plan to use many more of them in the back of my flowerbeds.
