It’s snowing again, and I’ve got a wicked head cold. It’s time to think about something pleasant like flowers.
I don’t get that excited about pink daylilies (although I certainly have a few favorites). I saw daylily ‘Designer Jeans’ blooming at Boerner Botanical Gardens a few years ago and was impressed by how robust and full of blooms the plant was, so I purchased one.
Officially ‘Designer Jeans’ is registered as a lavender with a darker lavender eyezone, but the plant looks more pink to me, or maybe mauve would be a better description. It’s a taller cultivar growing 34 inches with 6.5-inch flowers.
As with many of the daylilies in my yard, ‘Designer Jeans’ got moved. It bloomed fine for me the first year, but then I transplanted it and it sat out a summer in protest. This year it put on a lovely display.
Something about the color of the flowers says “old-fashioned” to me, but in a good way. I planted ‘Designer Jeans’ next to my balloon flowers as an experiment and I was thrilled with the color combination.
