When I potted up my tulip bulbs for forcing last fall I had enough to fill five, 7-inch pots. The only problem was that my refrigerator crisper drawers could only hold four. I decided to store the extra pot of bulbs on a regular refrigerator shelf to see what would happen.
I was optimistic when I retrieved the pot from the refrigerator after 14 weeks and all the bulbs started to sprout. Unfortunately, as they grew the plants became more stunted and twisted. Only one of the bulbs bloomed.
Triumph tulip ‘Salvo’ is supposed to grow 20 inches tall. The flowers are white with bold splashes of fuchsia on the petals. My lone flower was mostly white with tiny whispers of pink…pretty, but not true to form.
For best results, stick to the crisper drawer.
