The critters in my yard tend to leave double early tulips alone, so last summer I purchased a couple of cultivars to add some color to my flowerbeds in the early spring. This is ‘Valdivia’:
The peony-like flowers are very large (up to 6 inches across). They start out green and orange when the flower buds are forming.
Then they become a smoky orange with hints of yellow when in full bloom:
‘Valdivia’ grows about a foot tall and these bulbs prefer well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Mine are growing under a serviceberry that has just started to fully leaf out.
‘Valdivia’ is hardy in growing Zones 3-8.
