In addition to double early tulips, I also planted some Fosteriana (or Emperor) tulips last fall. I wanted to try them because they supposedly return year after year (perennialize). They also make great forcing tulips.
Wow, did ‘Orange Emperor’ ever impress me! This tulip grows 16 to 18 inches tall showcasing bright orange flowers with green flames. Despite our whiplash weather conditions lately (50s to mid-80s and back to 50s again in the same week) and the fact that a rabbit dug a nest right on top of my bulbs, ‘Orange Emperor’ has held up quite well.
I planted ‘Orange Emperor’ with Fosteriana tulip ‘Yellow Purissima’. The citrus colors blend beautifully together. I’m definitely going to plant more of these next fall.
