When flipping through seed catalogs in the depths of winter, it’s easy to be seduced by the dazzling photographs. But the flowers that bloom in your garden can often pale in comparison, so to speak.
I’ve been burned more than once by the promise of a hot pink or rich yellow only to discover flowers that look like they’ve been bleached and put through the washing machine one too many times.
That’s why I was quite pleased when my Zinnia ‘Profusion Yellow’ flowers opened for the first time in early June, and they were a lovely, bright-yellow. The color complements pink, purple, red and even orange flowers.
Profusion zinnias are practically idiot-proof. They don’t suffer diseases, and insects and bunnies aren’t interested in them. They grow just as happily in partial-shade as they do in full sun, and they’ll bloom from early summer until frost.
In the last few years breeders have introduced double Profusion zinnias and many new colors. I’ve been happy with all of them.
