Daylily ‘Dandy Dave’ is slowly creeping onto my list of favorite daylilies. The flowers are attractive, but not something that would make me stop in my tracks. But where ‘Dandy Dave’ really shines is garden performance. This is one sturdy daylily.
The 7-inch flowers grow on hearty plants with thick scapes that are loaded with flower buds. I divided ‘Dandy Dave’ last fall, and this summer I couldn’t tell the difference between the original plant and the new one because they both bloomed so heavily.
One of ‘Dandy Dave’s’ parents is ‘Red Volunteer’, a daylily that has won the Lenington All-American Award for great performance over a wide geographic area. ‘Dandy Dave’ has obviously inherited a lot of Red Volunteer’s characteristics.
‘Dandy Dave’ grows 28 inches tall and blooms in the middle of the daylily season.
