My ‘Midnight Blue’ shrub rose is really showing off this year. At one point the plant had more than two dozen flowers open at the same time. And it’s still loaded with buds. This cute little rose grows about 3 feet tall with clusters of blackish-purple flowers.
I haven’t had any disease problems with ‘Midnight Blue’, and it survives my Zone 5 winters without protection. Unfortunately, the Japanese Beetles just LOVE this rose and now that the beasts are out in force, they are devouring the flowers before they can even open fully.
Thankfully this rose blooms all summer long, so once the beetles have finished their annoying little life cycle, I will still have time to enjoy more flowers before frost.
