Amaryllis ‘Neon’

I went crazy and potted up nine amaryllis bulbs this fall. I blame the lousy growing season. For much of the summer it was just too hot to spend any time outside, and many of my flowers struggled in the heat and drought.

I wasn’t quite ready to retire my still-eager green thumb for the year, and amaryllis bulbs were the easiest way to guarantee I’d get to enjoy some flowers during the dreary late fall and winter months.

Almost all of the bulbs are already sending up leaves, but one amaryllis is already blooming. This is ‘Neon’:

‘Neon’ is a newer hybrid amaryllis. The plants have hot-pink flowers with a white throat and a lime-green eye. The flower stalks grow only 16 to 20 inches tall.

My plant topped out at 18 inches and displays 6 lovely blooms.
