Shaking off the Splotches

We finally got a reprieve from the rain. It was dry for more than a week and the plants and trees were able to dry out a bit and get some much-needed sunshine and warm temperatures. In fact I had to water some of my annuals and perennials for the first time this summer because they were getting parched in the heat.

Some of my plants reacted oddly to all that precipitation we’ve received over the last month or so. Gomphrena ‘Audray Bi-color Rose’ is supposed to have green leaves, but many of my plants started to display leaves with heavy red splotches:

The flowers, however, looked perfectly normal:

After the stretch of dry weather, the splotches disappeared and all the leaves returned to their fuzzy green selves.

There isn’t any leaf litter under the plants, so I’m pretty sure the green leaves are not new leaves. I think it’s amazing that a plant can change its appearance so drastically in just a week.
