It’s not unusual to get a killing frost this time of year. Not that many years ago we got one during the first week of September. Then of course it quickly warmed up into the 80s again just to add insult to injury.
The bees know that any day could be the last day to collect nectar, so they aren’t taking any chances. It’s standing-room-only at the zinnias these days:

At first glance thought the pic was of a Dahlia I have. The colour is similar, but my Dahlia is single. I tried Zinnias three years ago without success. This year I’m growing dark leafed dahlias. Seems like the earwigs are not attracted to them too much. The bees are active here as well. But not the last two days. We’ve had 84 mm of rain up to 9:30 this morning and it will continue until late this evening.
Maybe I’ll have to check out dark-leaved dahlias. I’ll try anything that doesn’t excite the beetles! That’s a lot of rain. We had a similar amount last week (most of it from one fast-moving thunderstorm), and it was just enough to knock us out of drought status and back into “abnormally dry.”
