I put a moratorium on all lily bulb purchases until the rodent population dies down (if that happens literally, I’m fully on board). In the mean time I planted some alliums (ornamental onions) this fall instead.
These tough plants resist deer and rodents. The types that grow in my Zone 5 garden bloom in early-to-late spring with the tulips and daffodils. Even after the flowers fade, the seed heads add interest to the garden. Later in the season the foliage dies back to the ground and is covered up by emerging perennials.
I like alliums because once planted they require no care. They are drought-resistant, have no disease issues and aren’t bothered by insect or animal pests. Plus they come back reliably year after year.
Take that, chipmunks and rabbits!
