In mid-October I planted one of the most stubborn amaryllis bulbs I’ve ever encountered. The goofy thing did absolutely nothing for 4 months except sit in its pot and mock me. In fact several times I almost tossed it out fearing it was a dud.
Four months later ‘Monte Carlo’ finally sent up a scape, and the first flower opened on the first day of spring. I’m not sure ‘Monte Carlo’ was worth such a long wait, but I’m still thankful for any blooming plants right now.
‘Monte Carlo’ grows 20-24 inches tall with cherry-red flowers that have a white star center and a yellow-green throat.
Most of my amaryllis bulbs were much shorter than their listed heights, but ‘Monte Carlo’ has indeed topped 24 inches tall. The flowers are huge—8 inches and the scape is nice and sturdy.
Better late than never, I guess.
