“Salsa-ing” Through Winter

My ‘Sombrero Salsa’ echinacea (coneflower) plant survived winter like a champ and is now screaming for attention in the flowerbed with its gorgeous, bright-red flowers.

I don’t have a good history with hybrid echinaceas, but so far this cultivar is a wonderful exception. I even took the fencing off my plant a few weeks ago because so far the rabbits have been few and far between. Last year at this time it was an all-out rabbit massacre of coneflowers and I even had to replace some of them with cardinal flowers or other plants that rabbits don’t nibble on.

‘Sombrero Salsa’ grows 2 feet tall. The plants have a compact, upright habit and will stun you with those rich, red blooms for many weeks in the summer.
