The stunning blue flowers on my many self-seeding borage plants were a favorite with bees this summer. And because that blue color is rare in the garden and because the plants bloomed impressively all summer long into fall, I’ve decided I will intentionally sprout some plants next year and add them to some of my annual beds.
Borage is an herb that grows 2-3 feet tall. The plants prefer full sun but will tolerate partial sun. I’ve had to stake my volunteers in the past, but this year they were nice and stocky until very late in the summer. The flowers are mostly down-facing, but you still get plenty of color from the backs of the petals. Or you can just bend over and peer up at them for the full effect:
