Definitely a Keeper

I finally pulled up my ‘Chef’s Choice’ tomato plants two weeks ago when we had our first light frost. The plants were still so loaded with green tomatoes that I felt guilty composting them.

In late September it was still warm and the tomatoes were ripening like crazy. When the first threat of frost came (it didn’t materialize) I picked about 2 dozen tomatoes and set them on the kitchen counter. We ate them as quickly as we could throughout October, but apparently there was no hurry. Over 6 weeks later there are 4 tomatoes still sitting on the counter and all of them are in excellent condition. It’s ridiculous.

No wonder this cultivar was a 2014 AAS Winner. I can’t think of anything negative to say about it. The plants have excellent disease resistance, and the number of tomatoes per plant is almost absurd. The meaty, tasty fruits weigh 6-12 ounces and, as I’ve recently discovered, keep for a VERY long time.

‘Chef’s Choice’ is going to be my tomato of choice for many years to come.
