After digging hundreds and hundreds of holes, my seedlings are finally in their new homes. I planted my flowerbeds on Wednesday and Thursday, and my mom and I planted her large border on Saturday. We were blessed with an all-day gentle rain on Sunday that gave the plants a nice drink, so I haven’t had to fret about them drying out.
I put deer fencing around some of my flowerbeds because the squirrels and chipmunks love to dig up new plants and leave them sitting on the top of the soil. If I don’t find them in time they bake in the sun and die. The fencing slows down the rabbits too. I’ll leave the fencing up for about 3 weeks until the plants get established and can fend for themselves and then I’ll remove it so it’s easier to weed the beds and photograph the flowers.
The weather was a bit chilly on the day I did the majority of my planting, but I liked it because I didn’t have to put on as much sunscreen and I didn’t overheat and wear out by mid-afternoon like I sometimes do. I was also serenaded by some late-arriving warblers while planting this year which made being outside all the more enjoyable.
When I was done with the flowerbeds I moved on to the pots, planters and barrels. I’ve stuffed a plant in every available patch of soil in this yard, and now it’s time to sit back and watch everything grow.
Well, I do have a bazillion weeds to pull so maybe I won’t be sitting back quite yet.
