My ‘Color Flash’ astilbe isn’t wasting any time on the flash this year. The foliage emerges lime green and slowly changes to burgundy-purple as the summer progresses. In fall the leaves morph into even brighter shades of red or bronze.

This is what my plants usually look like this time of year:

This spring the leaves were barely unfurled before they were starting to jump ahead to their fall colors:

We experienced a very cold spring. I wonder if that had anything to do with the sudden, fall-like foliage change?

‘Color Flash’ grows 10 inches tall and spreads about 20 inches. In summer the plants send up light-pink plumes that reach 15 or 20 inches tall.

‘Color Flash’ is hardy in Zones 4-9.
