Revitalized ‘Robina’

It’s no secret that I adore Orienpet lilies, and the summer of 2015 was a great year for them. In 2013, the first year ‘Robina’ bloomed for me, rabbits gnawed on the flower stalk and stripped off many of the leaves. The plant bloomed anyway, but I was a little confused by the color. The flowers are supposed to be a “crushed berry” color (I’m not sure what that means, but I didn’t think this was it):

The following summer the rabbits spared ‘Robina’ and the flowers appeared in a much darker shade of pink. I was smitten:

But ‘Robina’ wasn’t done morphing. This past summer when the flowers opened again in late July I was thrilled to see an even darker and richer pink color.

The plant was loaded with delightfully-fragrant flowers that bloomed for several weeks. Some lilies fade in the sun or look worn after a rain storm, but ‘Robina’ is tough and colorfast.

‘Robina’ grows about 4 feet tall and blooms in late July into August. The flowers are huge—nearly 8 inches wide. Plant the bulbs about 6 inches deep in well-draining soil in sun to part-shade. ‘Robina’ is supposed to be hardy in Zones 5-9, but my plant survived two harsh winters without any ill effects, so I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘Robina’ could thrive in Zone 4 as well.
