Baptisia ‘Purple Smoke’

Baptisias (False Indigo) begin blooming in late spring with lovely blue, purple or lavender flower spikes. This is ‘Purple Smoke’:

Baptisias are a member of the pea family. They prefer full sun and will tolerate partial shade although they may need to be staked.

‘Purple Smoke’ has, appropriately, smoky-purple flowers on plants that reach 3 to 4 feet tall when fully established. My plant is only a year old, but once it has been in my garden 3 or 4 years I can expect to see it loaded with as many as 50 flower stalks.

‘Purple Smoke’ is hardy in Zones 4-9.
