A couple of years ago I wrote about an adorable Asiatic lily with tiny, melon-colored flowers called ‘Orange Cocotte’. The 4-inch flowers appear in late June on sturdy stalks. Each bulb makes a colorful candelabra of blooms.
I fell in love with ‘Orange Cocotte’ and decided to try its sibling, ‘Yellow Cocotte’. I planted the bulbs in the fall of 2014, but I forgot to mark them and the following spring I accidentally dug up and mangled the bulbs. I didn’t know if I’d damaged them permanently or not, but I left a space for them just in case. Nothing bloomed last summer but I was thrilled to see plants pop out of the ground this spring.
Just like ‘Orange Cocotte’ the flowers from ‘Yellow Cocotte’ bulbs are only 4 inches wide. Aren’t they cute? The petals have a reddish-brown outline on them and the tiniest smattering of freckles. They also have no pollen:
‘Yellow Cocotte’ grows 3 feet tall, and the plants start blooming in late June. If they behave like ‘Orange Cocotte’ I’ll be seeing more and more flowers from these bulbs every year. ‘Yellow Cocotte’ is hardy in Zones 3-10.
