For many years I grew ‘Autumn Joy’ and ‘Autumn Fire’ sedums (showy stonecrop) which are both hardy perennials with light-pink flowers. But I fell in love with Sedum ‘Neon’ the moment I saw it blooming. It has beautiful dark-rose flower heads.
‘Neon’ grows 18 inches tall. The plants can be pinched back in the spring to prevent floppiness, but even when I forget to pinch my plants, the flopping is manageable. I rarely stake my plants.
I have a special place in my heart for ‘Neon’ because it is always one of the first perennials to pop out of the ground for me in the spring when I’m anxious to see any signs of growth after a long winter. This spring I divided my plant into four new ones. I was surprised to see how quickly they adapted to their new surroundings and started blooming as ambitiously as the parent plant.
Sedum ‘Neon’ is hardy in Zones 3-9 and can handle rough winters.
