‘Matrona’ is a German sedum (stonecrop) cultivar with light, rose-pink flowers.
I like sedums because they can handle the frigid temperatures and heavy snows that a Wisconsin winter often brings. ‘Matrona’ is hardy to Zone 3, and my plant thrives at the edge of a retaining wall that faces due north, so it’s fully exposed to the elements.
‘Matrona’ grows about 2 feet tall. Some sedums need staking or they splay out from the middle, but ‘Matrona’ has very sturdy, upright stems.
Sedums are irresistible to pollinators. In autumn I like to stand near the flowerbeds, close my eyes and listen to the hum of all the busy bees.
We had a severe hail storm in late September that shortened the growing season of many of my perennials, including my sedums. In the past I’ve had sedums blooming into November.
‘Matrona’ is a great fall plant for the middle or back of the border. The plants aren’t bothered by pests or diseases, don’t need staking and they’re tough. Pair them with asters for a late-season burst of color in your flowerbeds.
